BUILD & PLAY WASHTUB BASS

The Texas Jug Band is looking for musicians to play a light schedule in San Antonio. We try to book no more than 2-4 times a month and do NOT tour, or play more than 30 miles out from downtown San Antonio.

In addition to everything below, we need a lead vocalist who can play rhythm guitar, singing both lead & backup vocals.

Ideally (but not absolutely), we need a female, and someone able to switch off on a lead instrument (even a kazoo).

We are looking for a variety of instruments. Primarily Washboard, Lead Instruments, and Jug.

Everyone MUST sing, at least enough to add a background vocal.

Lead Vocals & complicated harmonies are welcome but not required.

We WILL play clubs, but concentrate on restaurants, retirement homes, chili cookoffs, etc.

We do largely Classic Country, Pre-Chicago Blues, and Classic Jugband songs. (Also, a Smattering of Bluegrass)

Jug Bands have historically had female voices adding harmony and lead vocals. Female musicians are especially welcomed.

We need lead instruments, in addition to Washboard, and Jug.

Lead instruments would include slide guitar, mandolin, harmonica, banjo & fiddle.

Instruments should be acoustic-electric, or acoustic with a pickup.

Fiddle, Banjo, Harmonica, and Mandolin can play in front of vocal microphones just fine, pickups are better (except harmonica).

We don't use any electronic instruments whatsoever.

If you can sing and play tambourine on the back-beat, you can play Washboard. It is tapped, and plays the part of a snare drum, rather than being a percussion instrument like a Zydeco Frottroir  (Rub-Board).

Jug is played like a tuba with no mouthpiece. It sounds a little rude when it solos!  Washtub Bass is the primary bass instrument, so the jug player can stop to add backup vocals (or rest lips!)

Rhythm Guitar players should play ninths (at least C9 & D9), and have a feel for simple, powerful, driving 12-bar Blues strums.

While we all enjoy an occasional (or more) beer, "substance" abusers need not apply. Please go abuse your "substance" of choice somewhere else. We all stay reasonably sober when we play.
